Movie Review: Welcome Back

Welcome-Back-Cover

Anees Bazmee returns after a four year break (last movie was Salman Khan starrer Ready in 2011) with Welcome Back. The trailers promised slapstick comedy, laughter and fun. But can Uday & Majnu deliver a big hit after a barren Bollywood August 2015?

1) Low IQ comedy
Anees Bazmee’s best movies have been Singh is Kingg & No Entry. All along his career, he has stuck to low IQ comedies, some of which made good box office returns. These are ‘relief’ movies meant to entertain all and sundry of the society with easy to understand jokes; songs, fights at drop of a hat and loud chatter weaving a supposed story.

2) Anil Kapoor shines
It pains to watch senior actors like Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal & Naseeruddin Shah wasted amongst a pool of ordinary cast with no scope to evoke emotions. At no point of the movie does one feel for any of the actors. However Anil Kapoor pulls off silver blazers, angled shoulder gait and fluorescent glares like none else. It’s mockery that he & Nana are paired opposite a newcomer (Ankita) whom they should’ve rejected for marriage (one of the many side stories) based on her wooden acting skills. Why wasn’t Mahi Gill considered?

3) Cheesy dialogues
The laughter comes mainly from assortment of well written dialogues. Sample these:

“Bangkok waali character hoke Haridwar waali feel mat de”

“Aapke sharafat ke chakkar me main kayde me hoon … varna ab tak mere khud ke do chaar Al-Qaeda hote”

“Gaadi bangla to kha liya, ab kasam bhi hamari hi khaoge?”

“Registaan me bhi Santoshi Mata ka power solid hai.”

“Yahaan ki makkhiyaan bhi ghoonghat odhke ghoomti hain.”

“Aapka apna beta…apne bataya bhi nahi? / Bataya nahi ka kya matlab hai, Mere ko chacha bhi hai..Mere mama bhi hai..Unke baare main kabhi apko bataya?” .. and many more.

4) John Abraham
After a brilliant Madras Cafe, the beef cake actor returns trying to do a bhai role which isn’t exactly his forte. John the producer has been par excellence (Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe) and lately he is busy with eight movies coming out within the next 400 days – here’s hoping a lot lot better from them. The climax of WB is so poor that you can expect John’s upcoming movies to rise from these pits.

5) What’s to see
At time of writing, the movie has done INR 55 crore business already. So what’s got it ticking:

– tension free occasional laughs
– Rajpal Yadav’s dance cameo while getting thrashed
– Graveyard antakshari scene
– Short & catchy songs
– Sexy colourful cars
– Dubai’s royal buildings
– Glimpse of Shiney Ahuja (a fine actor missed)

Rating: 2.5/5 (averaged with my kids who liked it more)

Box office prediction: No cricket on TV, no major releases coming this month, Ganapati festival season nearing and rains fast depleting spells success. Likely to be a hit, 100 crores and more.
