Foodies Costa Del Sol – Best Budget places to eat

After wonderful Costa Del Sol vacation, before completion of my football pilgrimage, I sit down to write my first food blog. I write on food to break some myths which readers (and friends) may have about food on vacations – that vegetarian food isn’t much available overseas, halal food is tough to get, that food at exotic locations has to be very expensive, and all types of food aren’t available in all locations!

Through my blogs I aim to filter and list only

– multiple types of cuisines at single location

– great tasty food

– already has great reviews over trip advisor

– costs 5$-10$ per person

– has vegetarian options

– halal mode of preparation (mostly)

– enough sightseeing/activity options around to spend full day

– absolute value for money

– good quantity serving

– and comfortable, decent ambience with clean toilets for refresh

It’s said great food can only enhance a happy mind. I start with South Spain, the exclusive Costa Del Sol coast belt and feature five types of cuisines in six great joints.

Location – MIJAS

Cuisine – Indian

Restaurant name – Indian Ocean

Area – PlayaMarina

Nearby full day activity – Beach / Nudist Beach

Keema Rice and hot naans with Sri Lankan curry

Indian Ocean was the reason I selected the next door resort for our Costa Del Sol stay. Where a plate of Keema Rice costs 3€, a butter chicken costs 7€ and two people can have a meal well under 12€. Large papadums, spicy yoghurt, olives come complimentary. Mr Ali will always make you feel comfortable and food is very tasty. Their curries have Pakistani, Indian and Sri Lankan cuisines. We feasted on the spicy black beans chicken (Sri Lankan dish) twice!

Cuisine – Chinese

Restaurant name – Gran Mundo Chino Restaurant

Area – PlayaMarina

Nearby full day activity – Beach / Nudist Beach

the two dishes on top, we reoeated both days!

Have Indian Ocean for lunch and after your beach day visit Gran Mundo for a light Chinese meal. Their prawns in chilli sauce and chicken sichuan are out of the world. If you take only plain rice with both dishes, a meal for two can be had for as low as 12€. We had with chicken chowmein which was great too. One more of caution the staff here struggle with English and communication in general. So take your patience with you!

Location – FUENGIROLA

Cuisine – Lebanese

Restaurant name – Beirut Cafe

Area – 200 metres from bus stop

Nearby full day activity – Kids theme park to zoo to beach to parks to cheap shopping.

spinach kawarma, can be made vegetarian also
my kids fooling at Beirut cafe entrance
Lamb kebab

Beirut cafe we visited only based on TripAdvisor reviews while searching ‘best cheap eats hidden gems’. We came to Fuengirola station n walked upto this place. An hour later we promised them to return another day. The staff are super fabulous warm and keep all customers engaged throughout the meal. Olives, pide bread (unlimited) and hummus was served complimentary (note all this complimentary) and that hummus was probably the best we ever tasted. On staff recommendation we ordered a lamb kebab (which was just ok ok) but what was fabulous was the aubergine moussaka and the spinach kawarma. Both must have dishes so too the hummus. The place stuck to the mind not just for food, but for caring staff.
So we visited them couple of days later. In my review in TripAdvisor (earlier visit), the owner replied incase he isn’t around next time, to call him for suggestions – which was sweet.

aubergine moussaka and potato spicy fries
lamb sambousek

In our second visit we loved the place even more. Not just for the complimentary yogurt laban (mint curd) or the complimentary pide bread flow or the complimentary pistachio baklava!! It was more for the care and affection the owners showered on us and interacted. Felt almost at home. The food as usual was top draw. We ordered lamb kibbeh and lamb sambousek and while both have simillar meat fillings, the sambousek tastes better while the kibbeh fills more! The aubergine moussaka we repeated (from last visit) and the potato fritas (fries) with Lebanese sauce and spices was liked as much too. If you are at Fuengirola I strongly recommend only to eat at this place. Plenty of attractions nearby. The kids Sould Park, lovely coastline, bus stop, train station, two cute parks and zoo are all within 100 metres to 500 metres walking of each other. So a full day family outing with lunch and dinner both at Beirut cafe is very strongly recommended. Five of the nine dishes we ate (over two visits) are vegetarian so vegans have no room to complain. Average meal price is 10€ per person (with water as drink) but if you order smartly and optimize the unlimited pide, then can easily get it down to 7€ per person. You will thank me. So welcome in advance!

Cuisine – Western Bakery

Restaurant name – Snack Cafe central

Area – Next to Regalos centro on Av de los Condes de San Isdro

Nearby full day activity – Kids theme park to zoo to beach to parks to cheap shopping.

This cafe has been here for long am told and while we only took fresh juice (really freshhh), waffles with chocolate sauce, tuna salad tapas and one coffee, the great taste aside, the total bill was barely 8€. The place also had pizzas, pastas etc so if Beirut cafe isn’t your thing, then this is great alternative for a full day or three to spend at Fuengirola.

Location – NERJA

Cuisine – Western Bakery

Outlet name – Cafeteria Anahi

Area – Calle Puerta del mar

Nearby full day activity – Nerja town to be clubbed with caves & Frigliana sightseeing.

egg sandwich that one is! and tasty too. alongside pepperoni pizza slice

This is a bakery-coffee shop-ice cream parlour type of outlet where 7€ is enough for a three course meal. Each of their dishes are fresh, supreme quality and served by good friendly staff. My kids had ‘Frozen movie Elsa’ theme icecream and my Wife had egg sandwich. Which is a safe indication that enough vegetarian options. Their sister restaurant (opposite) has toilets and magical ocean view. So..

Location – MARBELLA

Cuisine – Turkish

Outlet name – Artesanos Lebanese restaurant

Area – Puerta Banus

Nearby full day activity – Beach, sightseeing of posh cars, spot celebrities and high end shopping.

you cant find a cheap tasty joint such as this amongst celebrity spotting Marbella
Marbella has a high security area called La Zagaleta which has mansions of Vladimir Putin, Hugh Grant, George Clooney, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Rod Stewart to name just a few! This is zone for who’s who of the world to come and holiday. So the restaurants, nestled amidsts Desigual and Prada outlets, will be expensive. Very expensive. But a road away from the beach and expensive yatch parking areas, there houses a tiny Turkish outlet which serves almost every possible Turkish dish! The doner pizza we ordered was good size, yummy and priced just 5€. The baklava and few other sweets priced 2€ or less. The ambience here is cramped, as expected, but food and price wise, have a great meal!

Thanks for reading this. Do look forward to read my next blog on Foodies best budget places to eat Part 2: Barcelonaaaa
