Music Review: Watch ‘Embers’ – Lamb of God feat Deftones’ Chino Moreno is great fusion

Thrash metal giants Lamb of God have released the official music video of ‘Embers’ last weekend. Embers (meaning: a small piece of burning or glowing coal or wood in a dying fire) is a track from the band’s upcoming album, VII: Sturm und Drang. It features a vocal cameo from Deftones front man Chino Moreno.

Embers is good stuff

“Embers” at a shade over five minutes can be broken down to two equal halves. The first half starts with standard grunge rock sound and continues with good thrash metal stuff despite low budget CGI graphics video.

It’s then the second part which lifts up the entire song to another level. Specifically around 2:53 mins is where Deftones lead vocalist Chino Moreno takes over with his trademark haunting style. That section starts with a progressive rock fusion with thrash metal and ends with the music and tempo considerably slowing.

After that you want to go back and hear the song from the start, again and again.

The combination is probably the type which will please Opeth fans a lot, after the band stands confused between whether to concentrate on their existing thrash metal fan base or move towards their new found evolved music. Opeth’s Sorceress Video was also released earlier this month.

‘Embers’ Lyrics

Gather the bones and lay them in the sun in patterns that capture the eye
No one could know, display for everyone the holes in our souls we despise
Timber and stones monumental, remnants frozen in time
Carried alone the burden, knowing it was all we could do to survive

Only embers remain, refusing to fade
There’s still light to find our way
Only embers remain, black turning to gray
There’s still light to find our way
Only embers remain

Scatter the dust, what we once held in our hand seems was never at all
Gone in a gust, not ours to understand, an agony perpetual
Holding my breath and close my eyes, for a second I can see you again
Motionless, like that day we lost who we both should have been

Only embers remain, refusing to fade
There’s still light to find our way
Only embers remain, black turning to gray
There’s still light to find our way
Only embers…

I’ve been staring at her lying still for so long (she’s so still)
Waiting for this endless night to color into dawn (it’s never ending)
But it’s never lifting, always shifting, no one can breathe
It holds me under, and this drags down you (it drags you down)
This breaks what was made one into two
