Music Review: Maynard Keenan’s Puscifer is for estranged Tool fans

It’s been a decade since industrial metal cum progressive rock kings Tool have released any album. Frustating would be understated term to describe Tool fans.Tool lead Maynard James Keenan parallely kept himself busy with side projects A Perfect Circle & interestingly titled PusciferPuscifer last released a Maynard Keenan work album in 2015 called ‘Money Shot’ which was rated 7/10 by most magazines. The best song from that album is Arsonist, meaning a person who sets fire to property. Puscifer released video of Arsonist recently and it turns out to be  great song with a meaningless video.

Watch Puscifer’s latest video ‘The Arsonist’

The song does grow on the listener with couple of hearings but is massively effective if heard solely on audio. The latest video graphics of a wrestling sort of fight with ‘who farted’ tattoos, performance enhancing drug injections, weird tailed characters and groping is as tasteless as any A Perfect Circle video but the song has class. Hence its best advised to check out the 2015 video of this song.

This post is solely for Tool fans who miss the band!

The song lyrics are more about fire everywhere around, people choking and everything burning down. There are two more great songs in that album – Remedy and Grand Canyon. I wouldn’t recommend entire album buy though, certainly not in a year Metallica and The Pineapple Thief have come out with absolute gems.

Arsonist, previous video

Puscifer actually had released an alternate video for ‘Arsonist’ before using Beavis and Butthead which makes more meaning. Between both videos I would recommend the earlier one below. Here the video is completely in synch with the lyrcs and makes lots of sense. Two hearings and you are likely to giving repeat hearings to this softer version of Tool song. The drums stand out in this song.

Remedy

Puscifer’s most watched video and a lot like Tool-ish song and video would be Remedy. Remedy have the best lyrics of the three I chose and is all about human behavior within the family, society and circles. The song speaks explicitly about the need to stay humble and not wag your tongue like a racquet hurting people as it will all come back to bite you. Even if you are broken, down and out; just hold yourself strong and your tongue still.

Lyrics – Remedy

Our home, our rules, respect them or
Bitches receive stitches
Trolls receive 86’sStick around if you’re housebroken
Can’t hold your shit, hold your tongue, you got to go
Should you choose to react like an imbecile
You’ll in turn be treated so

Yes, we’re being condescending
Yes, that means were talking down to you
With all that racket from your lips a-flapping
We assumed you didn’t notice

Haters, isolators, no one misses these
Bitches receive stitches
Trolls receive 86’s

Yes, we’re being condescending
Yes, that means were talking down to you
With all that racket from your lips a-flapping
We assumed you didn’t notice

Haters, isolators, no one misses these
Bitches receive stitches
Trolls receive 86’s

You speak like someone who has never been
Smacked in the fucking mouth
That’s OK, we have the remedy
You speak like someone who has never been
Knocked the fuck on out
But we have your remedy

You speak like someone who has never been
Smacked in the fucking mouth
That’s OK, we have the remedy
You speak like someone who has never been
Knocked the fuck on out
But we have your remedy

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon is another Puscifer song which is Tool-ish. The chorus is best part of this number and its about a person standing on the edge. The lyrics go ‘Lost as I may be, All in the fog of my own noise and triviality; Grant, Holy Mother, grant me clarity
I am standing on the edge of forever… forever…”

Tool fans need not worry, Tool were touring America in 2016, you can find the itinerary here  Rumours of an album in 2017, are still ripe!
